How to Get Started - Competition Level BBQ
Are you interested in competing in BBQ competitions, but not sure how to get started? Here are some helpful hints to point you in the right direction.
First of all you might want to attend a few events to get a feel of how they work. There are many local events that you can start with. You could also attend some of the large national events to see how the professional Pit Masters compete.
In order to get the experience that you are going to need a great place to start is in the “backyard / patio” division. Many of the local and the large national events offer this level of competition. This will allow you test your barbecue and hone your skills. Remember many of the top Pit Masters have spent years perfecting their bbq. At this level it’s not just the taste, but also the appearance including the presentation plating for the judges.
Another thing to try is to become a BBQ Judge. There are classes you can take in order to become a Certified Judge. Search online for a class in your area.
